CEDAR FRESH CELEBRATES 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Small company making green products before green was “in”
MIAMI (January 2, 2009) – It started 25 years ago–before Al Gore’s video, before “aromatherapy”, and before it was cool to be green. After purchasing a home with a cedar-lined closet, Cedar Fresh founder Jay Butera was amazed by the natural benefits of this wondrous wood, namely how it repels mildew and pests such moths, roaches and silverfish while freshening with a soothing, forest-fresh scent.
And so began one man’s quest for a lower-cost, easier alternative to cedar-lined closets, and a safer alternative to the chemical repellents used for the same purpose. It led him to creating a host of 100% natural, cedar home storage products that slow mildew and repel pests like moths and roaches naturally. It also led to the invention of the first cedar “moth ball” as a natural alternative to the chemical moth balls and tablets that were popular in the 1980s and are even still sold today.
A small company success story, Cedar Fresh celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, providing green home products through national store chains including Wal-Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and others. Products like cedar wood blocks, balls, hangers and natural air fresheners are harvested from trees that are plentiful and prolific and grow wild in the eastern and south central US, including Arkansas and Missouri.
The company has always been environmentally conscious, taking advantage of the natural overgrowth of non-endangered Juniperus Virginiana, commonly known as aromatic or eastern red cedar, in rural US areas. When the fast-growing and equally fast-spreading trees start creeping into farmlands and become a nuisance for area farmers and homeowners, they are encouraged to harvest the trees instead of destroying them. Socially conscious as well, a large number of their products are produced at a mill that provides development and work activity for adults with disabilities.
Benefits of Eastern Red Cedar
Used for centuries in travel trunks and bridal hope chests, aromatic eastern red cedar has been scientifically proven to provide many benefits including repelling moths, carpet beetles, cockroaches and silverfish, providing a safe and natural alternative to chemical repellants and sprays. Natural cedar is also a great, chemical-free defense that can combat mustiness and mildew in storage spaces, shoes, closets, kitchen and other areas of the home.
